In creativity we trust…

It wasn’t until I volunteered to help the Graeme Robertson Trust a few years ago that I realised how tough things really are for design graduates these days. Graeme Robertson was an inspirational figure in Direct Marketing and a mentor to many of today’s leading lights in the industry. The Trust celebrates his memory by running an annual competition where shortlisted entrants are able to attend a “crit day” with Creative Directors from some of London’s leading agencies. The lucky winner enjoys a cash prize and a 3-month work placement to kickstart their career.

Meeting young graduates at my first crit day I found they were looking for unpaid placements rather than actual jobs. Most expected to wait around 18 months before being employed. A far cry from when I stepped out into the world with my portfolio 23 years ago and straight into work. Fast forward to the present day, with youth unemployment skyrocketing, and it’s tougher than ever before for young talent to find a sponsor.

So I’m delighted to have been appointed as a trustee of the Graeme Robertson Trust in November of this year. Together we’ve established a young ‘super’ agency of recent graduates to promote the charity and they are absolutely relishing the challenge. We’ve realigned the Trust to focus on helping students build better portfolios, so that all entrants will have their career prospects enhanced, and a new website will bring them closer to the industry by offering professional guidance and advice from recent graduates and industry veterans alike. We’re also looking for corporate sponsors to help us build a better future for Britain’s vital creative industry.

I’m bowled over to be a part of this and to be able to work with the trustees and fresh talent alike, with some new and some familiar faces joining us along the way.

This is just a quick note to welcome company directors Rob, Mark, Neil and Will as part-owners of the Jacob Bailey Group. A loan from Finance East assisted in the buyout of a minority shareholder by the key management team of Rob Manning, Neil Prentice, Will Wright and Mark Ledger (pictured with Stuart Ager of…

3 is the Magic Number

Veronica set off for pastures new last month and her’s were such big shoes to fill (metaphorically of course) that we had to recruit three new team members to replace her! That’s not strictly true… Account Manager Victoria (pictured, left) has actually been with us for a few months now. I know, I know, I…

Our sister company White Space won the Environment category at the Anglian Business Awards back in July, so we thought we’d follow this up by entering the Jacob Bailey Group into the East of England Business Champions 2011. The awards event took place at Tewin Bury Farm in Hertfordshire last Thursday and we had high…

Did you know the creative community is at war? It’s a very civilised affair of course, a war fought over skinny lattes in well appointed coffee houses. But it’s a war none the less. You see, many leading and experienced creatives feel the industry has become a little bland. They consider contemporary advertising lacking in…

Returning the compliment after the warm JB welcome, I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rich on completing the IDM Award in Data Management. I won’t bore you with too many details – let’s face it, data isn’t exactly the most exciting subject for my first blog post – but having a qualified Data…

Continuing the Aussie invasion here at JB towers, please join us in welcoming our new Senior Account Manager, Will Walsh – pictured beside the amazing air-balloon mural recently installed here at Zetland House by Sheffield-based street artist Phlegm – they still haven’t coughed up his fee. Will joins us from digital agency glue Isobar, where…

As I’m sure you’re all aware, today is World Car-free Day! Thanks to our commitment to the Fresh Ways to Work scheme, the vast majority of our team already travel to/from work by walking, cycling or using public transport, but we’ve made an extra effort today to try to get everyone here sustainably. And we’d…

It’s that time of year when most of us break from the day to day for a while. A sunny August afternoon and a little time off with the kids found me wandering the orchards of a local farm earlier this week… In no time the girls had picked a carrier bag full of ripe,…

I still can’t believe my time at JB Towers has come to an end! I can’t quite convince myself it’ll be anything other than business as usual on Monday, back at my desk, bantering with my clients and cracking on with their accounts… But all good things must come to an end. I’ve been lucky…
